Overdose Prevention

Overdose prevention offers evidence-based strategies that reduce the risk of dying from an overdose. We aim to support people who use drugs, and the people who love people who use drugs, with information to mitigate the risk of an overdose and to stop an overdose while it’s happening.

Tennessee Overdose Prevention

Drug overdoses have overtaken automobile accidents as the leading cause of accidental death in the United States. Although most overdoses occur in the presence of others, fear of arrest and prosecution prevents many people from calling 911. Tennessee's Addiction Treatment Act of 2015 protects victims and callers seeking medical assistance at drug or alcohol overdose scenes.

Naloxone Distribution Box

Care & Share is happy to announce the installation of a naloxone distribution box at their facility! Made possible by their partnership with the Unicoi County Prevention Coalition, the Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition, and funding from Ballad Health, this box is the first of its kind in our county and only the fourth in our region.

Naloxone

Naloxone (often known by the brand name Narcan®) is a crucial medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. It is an opioid antagonist, meaning it binds to opioid receptors in the brain, blocking and reversing the effects of other opioids like heroin, fentanyl, morphine, and oxycodone

Fentanyl test strips (FTS)

Fentanyl test strips (FTS) are a low-cost method of helping prevent drug overdoses and reducing harm. FTS are small strips of paper that can detect the presence of fentanyl in all different kinds of drugs (cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, etc.) and drug forms (pills, powder, and injectables).
